Description

Product description for Sottimano Currá, Barbaresco DOCG 2016 Sebastian Bordthäuser: The 2014 Currá is a classic Barbaresco with youthful, tart tannins and expansive fruit. With plenty of juice and smoothness, it captivates on the palate and is underpinned by aromas of bacon, bay leaf, and juniper. Its transparent freshness and delicate acidity make it the perfect Barbaresco for now—or while waiting for the 2016 vintage to ripen. The Azienda Agricola Sottimano was purchased by Rino Sottimano in the 1960s and is located in the heart of the Cottà vineyard. In the following years, it was gradually expanded to include the Crus Currá, Fausoni, Basarin, and Pajoré. Today, the winery is run by son Andrea and his sisters Elena and Claudia. Located in the triangle formed by Barbaresco, Neive, and Treiso, Sottimano has been working according to biodynamic guidelines for years to capture the site-specific character of its five crus as precisely as possible in the bottle. Currá is located in and covers 2.8 hectares with a south-southwest exposure. The vines are between 55 and 75 years old and grow on pure limestone; the average yield is 40 hl/ha. The wines from the Cru Currá always produce tannin-driven red wines combined with the charming elegance of Neive. Fermentation is always spontaneous with the wine’s own yeasts; maceration usually lasts 25 days, and malolactic fermentation also takes place spontaneously in French oak. The wines age for 24 months in barrels (15% new wood, the rest in second to fourth fillings), including 12 months on the lees. The use of wood in winemaking was modernized with the 2014 vintage, making the wines more accessible even in their youth, with immense vibrancy and depth. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Colour

Intense ruby red with a transparent core.

Nose

Fragrant salvos of fruit and flowers outline the nose of the 2016 Currá from Azienda Agricola Sottimano. Black cherries and sour cherries, as well as floral notes in the overtone range, herald a fruit-rich sip, spicy underpinned by aromas of black pepper, light tobacco, and bay leaves. The Bacchic hedonism is coolly balanced by the profound limestone minerality of the site.

Palate

The 2016 Currá from Azienda Agricola Sottimano is a typical Barbaresco. With a meaty bite, it combines its tightly laced tannins with deep dark fruit and a spicy backing. Cherries and blackberries are flanked by licorice, black pepper, and dark tobacco, all tightly wrapped with youthful tannins. A hyper-gastronomic wine that immediately appeals with its immediate presence and juicy extract.
