Description
Product description for Sottimano Basarin, Barbaresco DOCG 2020
Sebastian Bordthäuser: Power meets finesse, or Bruce Lee instead of Schwarzenegger. The extract-rich fruit builds immense pressure on the palate and floats as if on a magic carpet of powerful and tightly woven tannins, accelerated by the vibrant acidity. Fleshy and firm, it is underpinned by the radiantly clear fruit and cool minerality, which gives it vibration and tension. Open-hearted and joyful, with a rapid drinking flow and a fruity, ethereal finish.
Information about the wine
The Nebbiolo comes from the Basarin vineyard in Neive. Sottimano only acquired the three hectares of the vineyard in 2014. The vines in the plot are around 50 years old. The average yield is 40 hl/ha. Sottimano converted the vineyard directly to organic or biodynamic cultivation. The fruit was destemmed and fermented for up to 60 days or left on the skins, with the pomace cap being regularly punched down during fermentation in open stainless steel fermentation stands. Since 2020, the wine has been aged in large, slightly conical botti. The barrel aging period was around 24 months.
Colour
: Fairly transparent ruby red.
Nose
The 2020 “Basarin” reveals all its sensuality and eroticism in its aroma. This is a subtle, fine, and elegant Barbaresco that appears rounder, fruitier, and silkier than the winery’s other Barbarescos. Sweet cherries and sweet, ripe wild strawberries combine with notes of licorice, oranges, and raspberries, as well as ethereal notes of mint, a hint of black tea, and mocha.
Palate
On the palate, the wine offers an intoxicating feast of ripe red fruit, silky tannins, and sensual acidity. It is perhaps the most graceful of the five Barbarescos and also the one that reaches drinking maturity the earliest. The dark red cherry and berry fruit enchants with undergrowth and foliage, mint and black tea, mocha and dark chocolate. The wine is impressively transparent and clear with a fine acidity. You’ll want to drink it immediately!
