Description
Product description for Sottimano Basarin, Barbaresco DOCG 2018
Sebastian Bordthäuser: Power meets finesse, or Bruce Lee instead of Schwarzenegger. The extract-rich fruit builds immense pressure on the palate and floats as if on a magic carpet of powerful and tightly woven tannins, accelerated by the vibrant acidity. Fleshy and firm, it is underpinned by the radiantly clear fruit and cool minerality, which gives it vibration and excitement. Open-hearted and joyful, with a rapid drinking flow and a fruity, ethereal finish. The Azienda Agricola Sottimano was bought by Rino Sottimano in the 1960s and is located in the heart of the Cottà vineyard. In the following years, it was gradually expanded to include the Crus Currá, Fausoni, Basarin, and Pajoré. Today, the winery is run by son Andrea and his sisters Elena and Claudia. Located in the triangle formed by Barbaresco, Neive, and Treiso, Sottimano has been working according to biodynamic guidelines for years to capture the unique character of each of its five crus as precisely as possible in the bottle. The Cru Basarin is a historic vineyard in the Barbaresco region, located on the border of Neive and Treiso. The vines, averaging 25-60 years of age, are planted on a good three hectares facing southwest. The wines are incredibly complex, with a dense structure and considerable depth. Fermentation is always spontaneous with its own yeasts; maceration typically lasts 25 days, and malolactic fermentation also occurs spontaneously in French oak. The wines age for 24 months in barrels (15% new oak, the remainder in second to fourth fillings), including 12 months on the lees. The use of oak in winemaking was modernized with the 2014 vintage, making the wines more accessible, with immense vibrancy and depth, even in their youth. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Colour
Medium-bodied ruby red, transparent and clear.
Nose
The nose of the 2018 Basarin from Azienda Agricola Sottimano is intense and concentrated, with fruity-balsamic aromas and immense bass. Pulsating red fruits such as sweet cherry are further enhanced by robust Assam tea and spices such as black cardamom, juniper, and thyme; its distinctive smoky notes of tobacco are ethereally inspired by citrus notes of kumquats. This compact conglomerate of aromas presses from the glass with solid pressure, leaving you wanting more.
Palate
Power meets finesse, or Bruce Lee instead of Schwarzenegger. The extract-rich fruit builds immense momentum on the palate, floating like a magic carpet of powerful, tightly woven tannins, accelerated by the vibrant acidity. Fleshy and firm, it is underpinned by the radiantly clear fruit and cool minerality, which lend it vibrancy and excitement. Open-hearted and joyful, with a rapid flow and a fruity, ethereal finish.
