This single-varietal 2021 Mencía comes from 50-year-old vineyards in the San Lorenzo del Bierzo district, directly on the slopes of the Montes Aquilianos, a low mountain range. These are old bush vines trained in goblet-shaped vines, which are farmed organically. The Bierzo region is characterized by clayey, iron-rich soils. The Mencía was harvested and destemmed in small boxes. Alcoholic fermentation took place spontaneously and without temperature control. The wine then matured for three months on the fine lees in stainless steel.

Colour

Sparkling cherry red with bright reflections

Nose

The Mencia from Bierzo thrives on crisp, steely fruit. Endless sour cherries, followed by elderberries, currants, and a touch of raspberry. Plums, sloe, and thus almonds surround the berry fruit. This immediately gives it a darker, more mystical, and more elegant appearance. The fruit constantly oscillates between red and blue. A hint of burnt coconut wood and cinnamon now slowly emerges in the glass. It thrives on restraint and elegance. At the same time, it is inviting, unexcited, and charming.

Palate

Even with the first sip, this Galician wine clearly exceeds expectations. The fruit is so juicy and incredibly drinkable. Pure sour cherry. The other red and blue fruits on the nose are pleasantly crisp and thrive on a perfectly integrated acid structure. The fruit is so inviting that raising the glass becomes automatic. Uncomplicated, full of nonchalance, and the perfect balance between fruit and acidity. No tannin, just a few green accents. The finish seems further boosted by an ethereal, herbal freshness.
