Description
Product description for Salicutti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Piaggione 2018 (bio)
In 1994, Francesco Leanza reclaimed the land now known as Podere Salicutti. He reclaimed the hillside and planted the vines around the winery, the heart of the estate. Salicutti’s estate encompasses a total of 11 hectares, spread across 4.5 hectares of vineyards, an olive grove, and forest. In 2015, Sabine and Felix Eichbauer took over the business and consistently pursue Leanza’s organic approach—with a critical and reflective eye on the influence of humans and agricultural techniques. Podere Salicutti is the first certified organic winery in Montalcino. Planted in 1994, the vines grow in soils that have never been exposed to conventional pesticides. The Cru Piaggione is 1.2 hectares in size and lies at the foot of the cantina in an east-southeast-facing vineyard with skeletal limestone soils at an altitude of 420 to 450 meters. The vineyard is divided into two distinctly homogeneous plots by a terrace and was planted in 1994 and 2007. The wines from Piaggione are comparable to a fist in a velvet glove.
Colour
Dark ruby red, transparent and clear.
Nose
Powerful and nourishing, the 2018 Piaggione from Podere Salicutti exudes its fragrance from the goblet: Salumi and culatello give it abundant umami on the nose, followed by mild spicy notes reminiscent of black pepper and allspice. Beneath slumbers the dark fruit, which acts more as an accompaniment than as a leitmotif: Amarena cherries and a touch of mulberry are garnished with sandalwood and a touch of dark chocolate in the overtones. A striking character with a hedonistic, opulent nature.
Palate
It also reveals its distinctive, powerful side on the first sip: meaty on the palate, it also has plenty of umami, along with light roasted notes and a sensational tannin that gives it its meaty bite. Tightly woven and low-textured, it feels as if you could chew it. Black cardamom and pepper fill its spice box, while dark notes of tobacco and leather give it further depth. Despite its youth, it is highly balanced with good pressure and solid tension on the mid-palate. Large glasses are obligatory at this stage; time for contemplative enjoyment is advisable.
