Description
Product description for Pranzegg Caroline 2020 The Pranzegg winery is named after the estate where Martin Gojer has been producing his wines since 2009, reflecting their origins, the vintage, and the family’s lifestyle. Located above the Bolzano valley basin, Gojer’s vineyards are cultivated biodynamically by hand, and in the cellar, too, less is more: long fermentation and long maturation periods on the full lees with the addition of only small amounts of sulphur characterize the wines, which are always bottled unfined and unfiltered. The proportions of the varieties used in the Cuvée Caroline vary from year to year and come from a mixed white batch consisting of Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Manzoni bianco. The grapes grow at a good 400 meters above sea level, were harvested by hand, then mashed together, and rested on their skins for six days with a proportion of around 60% vines. After racking, the Caroline was placed in barrels, where it rested on the full lees for a year before being placed in concrete for a further eleven months before the new harvest.
Colour
Old gold with old gold reflections and a silky sheen.
Nose
At first, the 2020 Caroline von Pranzegg is still reserved on the nose. It quietly tells of the aging, the long lees storage, and the maceration on the skins, which is sometimes reminiscent of tea. You have to listen closely, then it begins to tell of herbs, tincture, chamomile, hay flowers, and nettles. Then it becomes piquant, with notes of white pepper alternating with linseed oil and orange zest. What may sound crude in detail is in constant change and, over time, merges into a large, aromatic whole with great calm and complexity.
Palate
The Caroline’s matrix is immediately established on the palate: with firm tannins, the palate is controlled by the animatingly fine phenolics, giving the impression that you could actually chew the wine. No unnecessary fruit fuss distracts from essential structural themes such as feel, extract, and texture. Only the skin of the peach, the stone of the apricot, the essence of the wine oscillates around the mouthfeel, which, when calibrated to a small size, is reminiscent of the finest of all sandpaper and roughens the palate in such a perfidious way that relief can only be found by continually topping up. As always, it will probably be finished very quickly.
