Wine Information

The grapes for this exceptional red wine come from a single vineyard planted in 1911 with the Cariñena (Carignan) variety. The old bush vines grow on a steep, northeast-facing slope at an altitude of 370 meters, which contains the famous Llicorella slate soils of the Priorat. The Clos del Portal winery cultivates the site biodynamically. The grapes were fermented with the stalks, followed by 18 months of aging in a single French oak barrel.

Nose

The expressive bouquet shows great freshness and depth, with notes of iron and stimulating floral and herbaceous aromas. Dark fruit is also typical of Cariñena. Overall, the nose is incredibly attractive, intense, and seductive. Expressiveness, complexity, and clarity blend seamlessly. The cool minerality grounds the wine, which is also a classic characteristic of Cariñena.

Palate

The wine fabulously combines electrifying freshness and excitement with the power and maturity typical of Priorat. The wine is concentrated, but not heavy. The rich tannin is ripe and fine-grained, and not at all astringent. The vibrant, very long finish is carried by a nervy acidity. In short: La Solana dels Marges stands for powerful elegance and possesses a great, independent personality. The days when the Cariñena grape variety was derided as “rustic” are definitely over.
