Description

Product description for Pian Dell’Orino Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2019

Info

In 2019, the Rosso di Montalcino comes from the Pian dell’Orino and Pian Bassolino vineyards, with the central part of the latter being used primarily. Highly calcareous clays, decomposed marl, and gray-blue clays are the most common. The vines are located at 360–500 meters above sea level and have an average age of 21 years. As with the Brunelli, selection takes place in the vineyard and subsequently on sorting tables. Spontaneous fermentation reached its peak at 30°C on day 8. The process lasted a total of 18 days. A further 15 days of maceration on the skins were carried out afterwards, during which malolactic fermentation also took place. The young wine matured in 50hl oak barrels for 32 months.

Nose

The opening is phenomenally spicy and wintry. Jan Erbach’s 2019 Rosso di Montalcino combines many spices and scents that I often prescribe in winter. Juniper appears alongside star anise, clove, and black pepper. Its dark fruit consists of plums, elderberry, and blackberry, as well as a spreading intensity of sour cherry. Roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and a hint of cigar box come through wonderfully. This cedarwood is spicy yet illuminating. Rosemary, oregano, and pine needles provide a successful ethereal spice finish.

Palate

With the first sip, it bundles itself into a fine, elegant stream. As if wrapped in dark silk, it appears smooth and elegant. The fruit is much more intense in its acidity, and the sour cherry also makes a significant impact on the palate. The spice is more balanced on the palate, lending it plenty of character on the finish. The tannins are extremely restrained, yet always present. Its acidity makes every sip a racy experience. Everything is in balance, and its elegance lingers long on the palate and in the finish.

Wine Advocate

Score: 93

The Pian dell’Orino 2019 Rosso di Montalcino is a bright and lively wine with tart cherry, blueberry and almond cookies, with a fun combination of sweetness and even a touch of bitterness. Its texture is silky and tense. You get a long, polished feel on the close that is very much in line with the elegant house style.

Vinous

Score: 93

The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino is dreamy, wafting up with dusty rose, crushed cherries and sage. This flows across the palate with ease, energetic and lifted with a solid core of ripe wild berry fruits that slowly drench the palate in youthful tension. A coating of fine-grained tannins remains offset by a bump of residual acidity, tapering off spicy and long. This is maturing beautifully in bottle.
