Description
Product description for Peter Jakob Kühn Riesling Oestricher Klosterberg 1G Erste Lage 2021 (bio)
Information about the wine
The name derives from the winery’s affiliation with the former Cistercian monastery of Gottesthal. The soil consists of calcareous loess with iron oxide, clay marl, and quartzite. It was deposited here millions of years ago as an “primordial shore” at 160 m above sea level. The plots are moderately steep, with a slope of approximately 15 to 20 percent, facing south-southwest.
Information about the winery
100% hand-picked, gentle whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, 16 months on the full lees in large wooden barrels.
Colour
Sparkling, light golden yellow with green reflections.
Nose
The 2021 Oestricher Klosterberg Riesling Erste Lage is graceful yet still distinctly closed. Cool, chalky notes combine with aromas of grapefruit peel, lime, green apple, bergamot, and lemon zest.
Palate
Delicate yet pleasantly provocative, it glides elegantly over the tongue, with a delicate salty note and invigorating acidity. Once again, the slightly tart grapefruit notes and pleasant spiciness lend it character and an incredibly stimulating structure. A great food accompaniment and a wine with fantastic potential that will benefit from further aging. Those who want to enjoy it at this youthful stage should decant it a few hours beforehand.

Score: 93
From sandy sediments and a west-facing slope, the 2021 Oestricher Klosterberg Riesling trocken 1G is clear, pure, fresh and complex on the spicy, bright, very elegant and citric-scented nose. Round, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a pure, saline, sharp and super savory Riesling with an intense but balanced fruit texture yet also precise, well-defined acidity. There are some greenish gooseberry nuances on the aftertaste. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2023.
