Description

Product description for Peter Jakob Kühn Riesling Hallgarten Alte Reben 2023 (bio)

Info

The Riesling Alte Reben comes from various plots around Hallgarten: Hendelberg, Jungfer, Schönhell, and Würzgarten. The Riesling vines here are planted on phyllite slate and quartzite on steep slopes at altitudes of 180 to 350 meters. The grapes are selectively harvested by hand. The grapes are gently pressed as whole bunches over several hours. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with natural yeasts. The wine is aged on the full lees for ten months until the end of August 2024 in large wooden barrels and stainless steel tanks. With 3.4g/l of residual sugar, the Riesling has 7.0g/l of acidity.

Colour

Bright straw yellow with green and light reflections.

Nose

The nose smells of origin, signature, and grape variety: Rheingau, Riesling, and Kühn. The Hallgarten origin is clearly recognizable here in the bright, fresh, and stony aromas. Its reduction still lingers somewhat in the air. But the fruit behind it is certainly present and crisp. Lime zest, green pear, and white peach are distinctive. Abundant kaffir lime leaves impart a certain depth. There is an intense aroma of herbs such as lemon balm, lemon thyme, chervil, and lemongrass. Coriander and mint complement this very well. Subtle vegetal notes are presented by savory, fennel, and pea shoots.

Palate

This interplay continues on the palate. Taut and tightly woven, yet incredibly juicy. Lean and bright. For a Riesling, it reveals very little fruit on the palate. But the acidity is all the more concise and distinctive. This challenges the wine. I like that very much. Its phenolics and texture make it incredibly stimulating. Despite its lightness, it can also handle powerful aromas.
