Description
Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Weisser Burgunder “Mandelberg” GG 2023 (bio)
Information about the wine
The Mandelberg is located southwest of Birkweiler and only 500 meters from the Kastanienbusch. The plots used for the wine are located at around 250 meters above sea level and face southeast. The elevation that stretches from the Hohenberg to the Rauhberg is a fault of the Rhine Graben, with Rotliegend from the Permian and Bunter Sandstone, Muschelkalk, and Keuper from the Triassic. The Weißburgunder grows primarily in Muschelkalk, which is interspersed with clay and is somewhat deeper than the comparable Im Sonnenschein site. The wine was matured after slow pressing and spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel.
Colour
Light straw yellow with green reflections
Nose
The Weißburgunder Mandelberg is the somewhat more fruity, creamy, and ripe counterpart to the Im Sonnenschein, which, however, was vinified with just as much clarity and precision, fineness, and refinement. Here, there is more clay in the soil and a bit more fat on the hips, which is expressed in slightly tropical notes and more ripe stone fruit. There are also citrus hints, herbs, and rock.
Palate
On the palate, the Mandelberg is juicy and mouth-filling, with pure, ripe, and charming fruit of stone fruit, pome fruit, a hint of papaya, and lemon. Added to this is a touch of lemon curd, extract sweetness, and a fine, silky texture, which makes the wine extremely charming. What is also present here, however, is a clear acidity that creates tension and a minerality that vibrates. Salt and grip are also added. Wood is also avoided, so that none of the pure expression of the Pinot Blanc in all its complexity is lost.

Wine Advocate
Score: 93
From an east-facing site in a higher altitude (compared to the Im Sonnenschein) and 100% vinified in stainless steel, the 2023 Mandelberg Weisser Burgunder GG combines ripe, elegant and juicy fruit with notes of ginger, earthy notes (carrots), smoked speck and fresh lemon juice. Very refined and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and textured, savory and saline-finishing Pinot Blanc with enormous power, but the wine is still on the elegant, fine and juicy side. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2025.

Score: (92-94)
The 2023 Weisser Burgunder Birkweiler Mandelberg Grosses Gewächs is from a late-ripening site on limestone that faces east and sits at a slightly higher elevation. Gentle apple blossom pairs with bright lemon zest on the nose. The palate has immediate grip, reminiscent of the tender skin of fresh almonds, with a lovely bitterness and salty allure. A concentrated vein of freshness comes across as pure zestiness. This is fine and bright with citric verve. (Bone-dry)
