Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Weisser Burgunder “Mandelberg” GG 2022 (bio)
Information about the location
The Mandelberg vineyard is located southwest of Birkweiler and about 500m southeast of the Kastanienbusch vineyard. The vineyards are located on a ridge that runs from the Hohenberg in the west over the Rauhberg to the east into the Rhine plain. The best parcels of the Mandelberg vineyard are east-facing slopes up to 250m above sea level. The slope gradient is between 10% and 30%. Due to the faults of the Rhine Graben, a very strong “uplift” occurred in the area around Siebeldingen, Birkweiler, Albersweiler, and Frankweiler, which revealed very deep-lying geological formations, such as the “Rotliegende” from the Permian period in nearby Kastanienbusch and formations from the Triassic period: Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk, and Keuper. The vines in the best vineyards of the Mandelberg are rooted in soils that were formed more than 200 million years ago, during the Muschelkalk period. Typical of these very calcareous soils from marine sediments are the beige-gray, quite angular limestones. Fossils of marine animals and plants, such as the eponymous mussels, are often found in them. Muschelkalk is the ideal basis for fine, elegant wines with great development and aging potential. The soil of the Mandelberg is somewhat loamier and deeper than the Muschelkalk soil in the Siebeldingen vineyard “Im Sonnenschein.”
Information on Vineyard Development
After selective hand-picking in several rounds, the grapes were processed using only gravity, a process that has been typical of our winery for over 70 years. The 24-hour maceration of the destemmed mash to release more aromas and minerality from the berry skins, the aging in stainless steel tanks, the avoidance of chaptalization, wine fining, or sweetening, and the extended storage on the lees for greater stability, complexity, and development potential are essential for our wine style. The late, very gentle bottling represents the final step in our accompaniment to an expressive, as authentic as possible, origin-influenced, and vintage-typical wine.
Colour
Light, sparkling golden yellow with delicate green reflections.
Nose
The 2022 Weißer Burgunder Mandelberg GG smells of ripe fruits such as pear, vineyard peach, orange, and a hint of mango. It suggests juiciness and beautiful density and concentration even on the nose. Subtle herbal aromas, as well as chalky and smoky notes, lend it complexity and verve.
Palate
On the tongue, it impresses with its freshness, saltiness, and the juicy fruit of the nose. Its fine tannins in the long finish not only encourage a second sip, but also invite pairing it with fine dishes; subtle bitter notes and citrus are the trump cards here. Excellent aging potential! If you want to enjoy it at this youthful stage, you should definitely open and decant it early.
