Product description for Ökonomierat Rebholz Riesling “Im Sonnenschein” GG 2021 (bio)
Wine Information
Most of the vineyards on the edge of the Haardt, at the transition from the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest, face east. However, the Siebeldinger vineyard of the same name in the Queichtal Valley is located in the sunshine region; it has a southerly exposure. The vineyard lies at an elevation of 160 to 250 meters and has a slope of 5 to 20%. The Riesling grows on Triassic limestone soil. The wine was vinified after destemming and a 24-hour maceration period. After preliminary clarification and natural sedimentation, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks and then aged on the fine lees for six months.
Colour
Medium straw yellow
Nose
In contrast to many other, rather cool-appearing wines of the vintage, the Riesling Im Sonnenschein appears rather juicy with a slightly floating sweetness of ripe fruit. The 2021 Großes Gewächs displays notes of lemon cream and white blossoms, some pear, apple, apple peel, and star fruit alongside overtones of smoke and mint.
Palate
On the palate, the Großes Gewächs is juicy, bright, and open with very good acidity and plenty of energy. Here, the wine appears more citrusy and cooler than on the nose, with its punch and a lot of salt. The shell limestone really kicks into high gear in this wine, combining power with a delicate creaminess. In addition to the bright fruit and sinewy acidity, there is also a pleasantly firm tannin that gives the Riesling plenty of structure.

Wine Advocate
Score: 96
The 2021 Im Sonnenschein Riesling GG offers a pure, dense and aromatic nose with notes of crushed limestone, herbs, citrus fruits and mocha beans. Round, lush and savory on the palate, with very fine, crystalline acidity, fine tannins and sustainable salinity, this is a full-bodied, rich and complex, even powerful but always juicy, elegant and refined Riesling with enormous substance and saline terroir expression. This is based on the fruit of Rebholz’s oldest vines, which were planted in 1961. Basket-pressed. Good punch. 12.5% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022.
