Product description for Odinstal Weissburgunder GG, Monopol 2022 (bio)
Information about the wine
The Odinstal Monopol Weissburgunder is named after its origins in the winery’s Monopol vineyard site. This site is characterized by basalt and Keuper soils above Wachenheim, where vines are planted that are around 35 years old. Around 90% of the juice was pressed directly from the press into five- to ten-year-old barrels, where it was fermented and aged with all its lees. A further 10% was fermented on the skins. The blend took place in the fall of the following year, followed by further maturation in stainless steel tanks for harmonization.
Colour
Medium straw yellow with light lees
Nose
For me, Andreas Schumann’s Weißburgunder Monopol Großes Gewächs is the most distinctive and distinctive GG Weißburgunder there is. This is already clear on the nose, where a symbiosis of slightly flint-smoky notes, a hint of volatile acidity, yeast, crumbly apple, and crisp white-fleshed fruits, as well as yellow citrus, awaits you. There’s also a hint of wood that fits perfectly.
Palate
On the palate, the Weißburgunder offers a pure, slightly chalky impression reminiscent of crushed oyster shells, along with salt, lemons, a touch of flint, verbena, and lemon balm, as well as a nervy, agile acidity. The wine is fresh and salty, possesses depth and length, ensuring a slight grip on the palate and vibrant energy. This is a completely different approach to Pinot Blanc in the Grand Cru range. Thank you for that.

Score: 94
From Wachenheim’s basalt and Keuper marl soils in higher altitudes, the 2022 Odinstal Monopol Weissburgunder GG opens with a deep, pure and elegant, flinty-mineral and still yeasty bouquet of fully ripe and fleshy yellow and white fruits. Full-bodied, lush and elegant on the first palate, this is a substantial and complex, remarkably refined and persistently saline and nervy Pinot Blanc with fine tannins and a long, aromatic and structural, refreshing saline finish. This is an excellent but still very young Pinot Blanc with great potential. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in October 2024.
