Product description for Nittnaus Anita & Hans Blaufränkisch Kalk & Schiefer 2022 (bio)

Colour

Dense, dark, luminous purple with violet reflections

Nose

Limestone and Slate is a wine that has accompanied me since my first steps in winemaking. Stylistically, the wine, much like the winery, has always remained in tune with the spirit of the times. But it always represents this ambivalent image, these two very distinctive soil types. The limestone leaves its linear, clear, precise impression. The slate evokes the impression of wet, cold stones with plenty of potential for the fruit to develop. Sweet cherry, morello cherry, blackberry, raspberry, and black currant are very present on the nose. The fruit is surrounded by a subtle nuance of cold smoke and plenty of stony components. Dark blossoms such as violets and hibiscus round it off very elegantly. Only timidly does the spice of rosemary and sage, as well as white pepper and juniper, shine through.

Palate

The first sip is immediately juicy and concise. It’s immediately full. The dense fruit is equally balanced by the compact acidity structure. This draws the fruit in, and the juicy character quickly transforms into a long, lively finish. The fruit remains berry-like, and the cherry clearly transforms into sour cherry. The spice remains restrained here, although its herbal accents are convincing with distinct, ethereal accents.

Vinous

Score: 90

The 2022 Blaufränkisch Kalk & Schiefer is one of Burgenland’s most reliable village reds. Fermented in tank and aged in 500-liter barrel, this is a lovely picture of Blaufränkisch. It’s always vivid, peppery and bright with blueberry notes. The palate is wonderfully juicy, beautifully dense with smooth tannins and absolutely vivid with its varietal freshness.
