Product description for Nikolaihof semicolon ; Riesling 2020 (bio)
Wine Info
In the context of semicolon, Katharina Salzgeber and Nikolaus Saahs explore the potential of Gewürztraminer and Riesling. How does the grape variety react when a different approach is chosen regarding harvest time, processing, and aging? Like the semicolon, which is not subject to any grammatical rules in terms of use and interpretation, but rather appeals to the esprit of both the writer and the reader, the wines shed the corset (of the familiar) and encourage the drinker to taste and sense their wines with confidence.
Wine Info
30% mash, 70% must; ten months of aging in used oak without fining, stabilization, filtration, or the addition of sulfur.
Colour
Deep golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Riesling semicolon has a primal and intense aroma, with dried meadow herbs, apple, apple peel, and wine yeast dominating the opening. It invites the carafe to open and unfold. With oxygen, further fruity notes of quince and floral notes of honeysuckle, chamomile, and elderflower emerge.
Palate
Precise, dry, and yeasty-spicy, the demanding palate reveals a whole new way of winemaking. A truly refreshing style that pairs perfectly with a purist, natural, and herb-influenced cuisine.

The 2020 Riesling Semicolon, from estate fruit, was made with 30% whole, foot-trodden bunches in the ferment. After three weeks, once the ferment finished, the free-run must was drawn off and matured for six months in old barriques, then bottled without filtration or sulfur dioxide. Lovely reduction lends a delicious smokiness to the nose and wraps itself around juicy, green-red pear. The palate is vivid and fresh, beautifully salty on a clear-cut, linear, bone-dry body far juicier than a skin-fermented wine would suggest. This majors in tautness and linearity with just the slightest veil of phenolics. The 2020 is far too easy to drink with its absolute refreshment factor. (Bone-dry)
