Description

Product description for Nikolaihof Im Weingebirge, Grüner Veltliner Smaragd trocken 2011 (bio)

Archive Release 2024.

Origin

The “Im Weingebirge” vineyard is a so-called “vineyard within a vineyard.” It belongs to the “Alte Point” vineyard and borders the “Strudel” and “Süßenberg” vineyards above Mautern. The site covers a full six hectares and extends northwards from 206 to 225 meters up the slope. The subsoil is dominated by paragneiss, which here and there reaches the surface. The topsoil consists of clay and, above all, loess.

Colour

ripe dandelion yellow

Nose

The aroma is somewhat less colourfully defined than its predecessor, appears more ripe and is reminiscent of ripe Boskop apple, Williams pears, and quince. Spices such as nutmeg, dried oregano, and dried marjoram play an important role. In retrospect, does Oxtail seem slightly smoked?!

Palate

The malty, sweet flavour allows for a subtle acidity to shine through, but seems somewhat overpowered by the aromatics, thus broadening, i.e., more voluminous. Overall, winey, round, very concentrated, and spicy in the lingering finish, right down to the last drop.

Wine Advocate

Score: 92

2011 Ried Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is deep, intense and flinty on the nose that reveals a ripe, matured seed and stone fruit aroma intertwined with straw and dried seed aromas. Full-bodied, intense and sustainable on the palate, this is a powerful and tightly structured Veltliner with generosity in body and texture but also a persistent salinity and fine tannins on the long finish. It’s still energetic in its structure, but the fruit is already wilting. This is a matured Veltliner. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.
