Product description for Moric Lutzmannsburg, Alte Reben 2018
Information about the wine
The Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben is a Blaufränkisch selection from the oldest and best vineyards. The Lutzmannsburg plateau was formed on a prehistoric volcano, on which different layers were deposited over time. Today, sediments from the Pannonian Sea can be found in the form of limestone, loam, sand, and clay, as well as deposits of volcanic origin. The 2018 Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben was selected from six plots. The vines are between 85 and 110 years old. Around 20% of the harvest was fermented as whole bunches with stalks. After the spontaneous initiation, fermentation lasted 23 to 28 days in open wooden vats. After very careful pressing into 500- and 600-liter barrels, the wine rested on its full lees for eleven months, where spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place. The first racking took place after approximately one year. The Blaufränkisch then matured for a further twelve months in 500-liter barrels. Bottling took place at the end of September 2019. There was no fining, no filtration, and only minimal addition of sulfites.
Colour
Deep red between ruby and garnet with violet reflections
Nose
Herbs, elderberries, black cherries, and mulberries combined with a touch of tar, peat, and wood are the markers by which one can currently assess the potential of this great Burgenland wine. The wine’s dark, multifaceted aromas are seductive from the outset. After hours with plenty of air, it fans out significantly, revealing ever more berry, stone, and violet aromas.
Palate
The 2018 Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben is a wine that, after four years, already shows its full potential, but that’s exactly what it is. It’s one that should ideally age for a decade, even though it’s already so seductive. It seems as dense and generous as it is balanced and precise. The Blaufränkisch oscillates between red and dark berries, wild herbs, stone, and earthy notes, offering plenty of tannin that, however well-measured, appears ripe, and elegant. The wine coats the palate with velvet and silk and dances on the tongue despite its depth and fullness. It’s already great now, but it will become even more complex and self-contained over time. A wine for the next 20 years and more.
