Product description for Marcoux Lirac “La Lorentine” AOC 2021 (bio)
Info
The vineyards of Domaine de Marcoux in Saint Laurent des Arbres are located at the heart of the Lirac appellation. 7 hectares are located there on the western slopes of the Rhône. The cuvée consists of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah. The vines are planted on limestone with plenty of red clay, gravel, pebbles, and sand. The grapes are checked both in the vineyard and on the sorting table. Completely destemmed, they are then pressed and macerated in a cool, dry state before fermentation. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, and the pomace cap is pumped over daily. The wine then ages in cement tanks and foudres. Bottling takes place 19 months after the harvest.
Colour
Dense purple with delicate violet reflections
Nose
The fruit flows deep and dark from the glass. Cassis, morello cherry, and blackberry dominate. Added to this is a generous portion of sweet cherry and rosehip. Dark blossoms such as hibiscus, pansies, and lilac embrace the fruit. This dark component quickly takes over. Raisins and dates are added, providing depth and manifesting the aromas of fruit and blossom. A touch of dark chocolate is mixed in. Black pepper, juniper, rosemary, and black olive also characterize it in a distinctive way. Cedarwood and abundant tobacco leaves noticeably gain importance with some air.
Palate
It flows slowly across the palate. While it is certainly lush and concentrated, it is anything but heavy. The fine but distinctive tannin structure guides it across the gustatory floor, clearly characterized by fruit and floral aromas. The important acid structure is part of its success story and ensures a noticeable length on the palate. The spice comes through fully, especially in the finish. In the aftertaste, roasted almonds suddenly have a very pleasant effect.

Wine Advocate
Score: 89
The 2021 Lirac La Lorentine is mainly Syrah and Mourvèdre, with some Grenache, from a small property the Armeniers began working with in 2003. It’s a bit tarry on the nose, but it opens up to reveal black olives and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, it’s a more linear, focused effort than usual, with a bit of astringency on the finish.
