Product description for Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vieilles Vignes AOC 2021 (bio)
Info
The Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is based on specially selected plots of very old vines. In Charbonnières, on the northern slopes of the La Crau plateau, the planting is primarily Grenache, which was planted as early as 1900. 2.3 hectares are planted 98% with Grenache, along with small amounts of Mourvèdre and other varieties. In Les Esqueirons, another hectare of Grenache is planted on the west-facing slopes of the fortress, planted in 1949. All of these grapes are harvested at the same time. Selection is initially done manually in the vineyard and later on the sorting table. The grapes are completely destemmed, crushed, and cold macerated. Fermentation is also temperature-controlled, and the pomace cap is basted daily by “remontage.” Maceration lasts approximately four weeks before pressing and preparation for malolactic fermentation. This is followed by racking and blending. The wine matures primarily in cement tanks and additionally in foudres.
Colour
Dark, luminous cherry red with a light rim.
Nose
The nose is deep and mysterious. It still fluctuates greatly between fruit and its ethereal and balsamic spiciness. Undeniable notes of morello cherry, blackberry, elderberry, and hints of sloe are evident. A touch of cocoa butter and strongly roasted coffee are clearly evident. Juniper berry, black pepper, allspice, and cinnamon lend it plenty of spice. A touch of cigar box and pale tobacco leaves add another layer to this moment. Rosemary, eucalyptus, and ginger contribute a good amount of herbal spice with plenty of freshness. Darkest floral accents like hibiscus give it a very silky, elegant component. Salty licorice wrapped in dark chocolate is an obvious association. Absolutely at the beginning of its time and still a sleeping giant.
Palate
The mouth is lined with extremely fine tannins. It is so fine-pored and stimulating – WOW! Supported by this framework, it drives its aromatics forward. The fruit submits itself to this without losing its stage. But less expressively. In return, the ethereal spiciness comes into its own. This wonderful Mediterranean moment also thrives on freshness and green contrasts. Its abundance of balsamic elements such as coffee, chocolate, and spices repeatedly break through. The salty licorice also makes a beautiful appearance. Very good length, and the high alcohol content, which is considered normal for the region, is wonderfully balanced.
