Description

Product description for Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vieilles Vignes AOC 2020 (bio)

About the Wine

In the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, the Armenier family owns a total of 13 plots with different soil types, such as the famous rolled pebbles on clay-rich subsoil, which retains water well, but also reddish sandstone soils and colluvial sediments, as well as limestone soils from the Cretaceous period, which lend the wine great vibrancy. Grenache Noir dominates by far, complemented by some Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cinsault. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, which varies from one plot to another and also according to the grape variety. The selected grapes are destemmed, crushed, and cooled. They are then allowed time in the tank until the natural yeasts take effect. The wine is aged for 18 months in concrete tanks, supplemented by a few foudres and older 350-liter barrels.

Colour

Muted garnet red with violet reflections.

Nose

The aromas of the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape “Vielles Vignes” are profound and extremely concentrated. Sweet berries, figs, dates, chocolate, roasted hazelnuts, cocoa, and sweet mocha. You’ll want to sink into its charming depths.

Palate

Enormous density and concentration on the palate: a wine that seeks the accompaniment of intense cuisine and will develop wonderfully over the coming years. Its minerality and structure will last for decades. Patience is required, and for the impatient, a carafe and the right food accompaniment are recommended. Decant now and serve slightly chilled from large glasses.

Wine Advocate

Score: (97-99)

Still in foudre working through the last few grams of sugar when I tasted it in July 2022, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes showcases bold black-cherry fruit that virtually knocked this taster’s head backwards. It’s full-bodied on the palate, building in intensity and complexity on the lengthy finish, where notes of raspberries, star anise and garrigue merge seamlessly into the wine’s supple, velvety texture.

Vinous

Score: 97

A towering effort, the 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with pristine crème de cassis, raspberry jam, black plum, scorched earth, incense, mint, exotic spice and white pepper aromas. The precision of the individual perfumes has a laser-like quality rarely seen in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Full-bodied and framed by ever-so-velvety tannins, it reaches a spherical dimension in the mouth. The recent adoption of 3,000-liter Austrian oak barrels beautifully contributed to the shape of this wine, giving it terrific poise and tension.
