Product description for Marco de Bartoli Vecchio Samperi NV
Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, the Vecchio Samperi displays great fullness on the one hand, while on the other, the acidity cuts through the thicket of aromas like a machete. Here, too, one can detect slightly dried fruit, a spectrum of nuts, a hint of baked dough with plenty of butter, seasoned with orange peel. Yes, the orange notes are more intense here than they were on the nose. They lead the wine to a striking finish of great length and density. If one were to classify the Vecchio Samperi stylistically, the Sercial from the island of Madeira springs to mind, or perhaps an Amontillado from Jerez. But that would have to be of an excellent variety to compete with the Vecchio Samperi.
About the wine
Vecchio Samperi was the first wine bottled by Marco de Bartoli. He pays homage to his limestone-rich vineyard in Contrada Samperi, just outside Marsala. There, on twelve hectares, the Grillo for his Marsala grows. The Grillo he uses here comes from 20- to 42-year-old vines planted in Albarello. The harvest is 20 hl/ha. The Grillo is slowly fermented at room temperature in open oak and walnut vats and then placed in a perpetuum vat, also known as a solera in Sherry regions. This is a series of barrels in which the wine has been aging since 1980. Each year, 5% is removed and 5% is added. The alcohol content is 16.69%, the sugar content is 12.6 grams, the acidity is 6.7 grams, the sulphur content is 8 mg/l, and the pH is 3.26.

Nose
The Vecchio Samperi has a stunningly fine and balanced nose. It oscillates between dried and fresh stone fruit, unripe walnuts, a hazelnut tart, and ripe citrus fruits. The delicate sweetness that works its way through the tart nut aromas is particularly appealing.
Palate

Here, too, the slightly dried fruit is evident, a spectrum of nuts, a hint of baked dough with plenty of butter, seasoned with orange peel. Yes, the orange notes are more intense here than they were on the nose. They guide the wine into a striking finish of great length and density.
