Description
Product description for Marco de Bartoli Rosso di Marco, Pignatello IGP 2020
Marco de Bartoli not only invented the dry Grillo, but also revolutionized Marsala by combining its traditional style with modern vinification. The red wines from the de Bartoli house are less well known – and unjustly so. The Rosso di Marco is made from 100% Pignatello grapes. This variety is also known as Perricone, a traditional black grape from Sicily’s Wild West. Only 80 hectares are currently planted with this variety, which is primarily found in blends rather than as a single varietal. Its name derives from the so-called “pignatiddare,” the red soils of the province of Trapani, from which the traditional terracotta cooking pots known as “pignatte” are made. The vineyards for this wine were planted in the late 1990s and the early 2000s, with 3,500 vines per hectare using the Guyot system. The grapes are harvested and selected by hand, pressed in steel, and fermented spontaneously. The wine then matures in French Tronçais oak and in the bottle.
Colour
Deep dark ruby red with a black core.
Nose
The 2020 Rosso di Marco from de Bartoli displays wild spices on the nose, with small black cherries, impenetrable maquis, and a subtle core note. Black fruits such as sloes, elderberries, and mulberries mingle with wild and distinctively tart herbal notes. An unbridled animal aura surrounds this rare red from western Sicily.
Palate
The first sip is dominated by the rigorous dark fruit, whose luscious juice is contoured by sublime minerality and finely crafted tannins, aromatically reminiscent of high-proof dark chocolate. The palate also has distinctively tart facets, again reminiscent of chocolate. Combined with the radiant acidity and impeccable tannins, the Rosso di Marco is a unique Sicilian red wine.

Vinous
Score: 91
The 2020 Rosso di Marco is a varietal Pignatello, a local Perricone biotype that opens with a wildly fresh bouquet of crushed strawberries, roses and white pepper. It’s round and supple with depths of dark red fruits and spices. Zesty acidity adds a sweet and sour twang as vivid notes of licorice fade.
