Description
Product description for Marco de Bartoli Marsala Superiore Oro Riserva 2009 2009
Marco de Bartoli not only invented the dry Grillo, but also revolutionized Marsala by combining its traditional style with modern vinification. One step in this direction was reducing the sugar content, which resulted in this semi-dry Marsala style in 1985. In keeping with tradition, it is fortified with a “mistella” of fresh grape must and a fruit brandy made from the same grapes as the base wine. This means that, unlike the Vecchio Samperi, this semi-dry style is always fortified with alcohol. It combines the power and personality of a classic Marsala with a delicate stature and subtle freshness. To prevent unwanted oxidation, any contact with oxygen is avoided during vinification. Aged in French oak, the barrels are constantly refilled. Made from 100% Grillo grapes, this wine is planted between 1970 and 1996 in the Contrada Samperi, on predominantly flat terrain with sandy loam soil. The vines are trained using the Alberello and Guyot systems. The grapes are harvested and selected by hand, gently pressed, naturally decanted, and fermented traditionally with wild yeasts at room temperature in oak barrels. Part of the must is enriched with grape must to produce the “mistella,” which is later added to the wine. The wine ages for over 10 years in oak barrels of various sizes.
Colour
: Amber with distinctive orange highlights.
Nose
The nose of the 2009 Marsala Superiore Oro by Marco de Bartoli sprays its exuberant perfume from the glass like an anti-aircraft searchlight: dried fruit aromas of figs, dates, dried orange slices, candied orange peel, and gingerbread stream from the glass, underpinned by roasted notes of salted roasted almonds, cashews, raisins, and cigar box. An incredibly complex and multi-layered nose that makes the lips purse expectantly towards the glass.
Palate
Slender with balanced sweetness and an all-defining acidity on the first sip, it is structurally straightforward and completely free of oxidation. Whether enjoyed as an aperitif or at the table, it is inexplicable what has caused this type of wine to disappear from the scene. With an outstanding drinkability, it is captivating with complex and profound aromatics that are enormously versatile, especially at the table. Mild spices, candied orange peel, dried fruit and roasted nuts are also reflected aromatically on the palate, carried by orchestral acidity and an almost endless aftertaste.

The 2009 Marsala Oro Superiore Riserva captivates with a bouquet that mixes savory and sweet, as shavings of pine and cedar give way to incense, dusty flowers and dried apricots. It’s silky and enveloping, with a combination of sweet exotic spice and salty minerals that penetrate deeply. The 2009 echoes on, dramatically long and staining, with crushed hazelnuts, dried orange peel and a warming tinge of alcoholic heat that heightens the experience.
