Wine Information

This white wine from the Basque region of Rioja comes from old Viura vines grown on the calcareous and iron-rich clay soils common in the region. The biodynamically cultivated grapes are directly pressed and spontaneously fermented. The wine matures for six months in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels, one-third of which are new. The result is a complex wine that is characteristic of the Viura grape variety and the Rioja region.

Nose

The nose reveals the typical Viura aromas of white flowers, yellow apple, and pear. However, the primary fruit in Viura rarely appears overly exuberantly, as is the case in this white wine. The delicate fruit is accompanied by secondary aromas such as biscuit, coconut, and a hint of marzipan. Everything appears very balanced, fresh, and of good intensity. Notes of dried herbs and grasses further contribute to the complexity and ensure an overall attractive and stimulating bouquet.

Palate

On the palate, the Txabola Viura 2021 presents itself as full-bodied and creamy-textured. It is fresh and lively, developing a great grip in the mouth. The aromas are dominated by ripe apples and a subtly sweet spice. A slight bitterness reminiscent of almond shells emerges on the fairly long finish. Both the wood (six months of aging in oak barrels) and the 14 percent alcohol content are excellently integrated. Overall, this is a complex and drinkable white wine, one that could hardly be more typical of the younger Rioja. It already performs well, but certainly also has very good aging potential. It also practically demands a food pairing.
