Wine Information

Les Chemins d’Avize is Larmandier-Bernier’s fourth single-vineyard champagne, following Vieille Vigne du Levant (formerly Cramant, 1988), Terre de Vertus (1955), and Rosé de Saignée (1999). The Chardonnay comes from the two neighboring plots, Chemin de Plivot and Chemin de Flavigny. The vines are 50 years old. The grapes are gently pressed, the juice is very lightly clarified, and then goes directly into wood. Natural alcoholic fermentation and malolactic fermentation begin spontaneously in Stockinger barrels and vats. The wines age on their lees for the first year without filtering or fining. The bottles are aged sur lattes for at least five additional years. Each bottle is disgorged by hand six months before release. The dosage is only 2 g/l (extra brut).

Colour

Light golden yellow with a fine mousse.

Nose

The 2016 Avize Champagne has a beguilingly sensual, juicy, and elegant aroma, yet also powerful, punchy, and precise. It smells of patisserie with the finest vanilla, yellow apples, pears, and greengage, lemon confit and orange peel, but above all of fine spices, a hint of ginger, and crème fraîche.

Palate

On the palate, Les Chemins d’Avize is expansive, silky, and initially almost soft, before the minerality fully shines through. It is a great, noble champagne with consummate density and length, great finesse, deep minerality, and a wide range of fresh and sensual aromas. Ripe lemons and grapefruits, nougat and pear cream, a touch of vanilla and cinnamon combine with a hint of ripe sweetness. The acidity structure is sensual, not demanding, but straightforward. The volume is as impressive as the energy.
