Description
Product description for Lacourte-Godbillon Terroirs d’Ecueil, Premier Cru Extra Brut NV
The winery of Geraldine Lacourte and her husband Richard Desvignes (what a beautiful name for a winemaker!) is located in Ecueil, in the heart of the Petit Montagne de Reims. They focus entirely on the 1er Cru vineyards in this area, which means short distances and they spend a lot of time in their vineyards. They converted to organic viticulture in 2016, and their vineyards are bursting with vitality. Both have seen a lot of the world and only decided late in life to take over Geraldine’s parents’ estate. Geraldine worked in marketing in Germany for years! The style is therefore not outdated, but rather modern. The base wines are fermented in stainless steel and do not necessarily make the malolactic fermentation (MLF). Only a portion is aged in barriques. Very clear, precise, and taut, they beautifully reflect their origins, never aggressive, always with a delicate fruitiness and elegant depth.
Colour
Pale straw yellow, bright and clear.
Nose
With a lush opening, the nose combines aromas of orange zest, red apple peel, and green almonds with autolysis notes of yeast, breadcrumbs, and roasted hazelnuts. Presence is the theme that plays into the Terroir d’Ecueil’s hands when a good glass of champagne is called for: Intense with charming fruit, it immediately stands out in the glass like an A+ with a star.
Palate
With a fine pearl, the Terroir d’Ecueil from Lacourte-Godbillon flows elegantly over the drinker’s palate. With juicy, sloppy fruit and a subtle yeast note, the cuvée of 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay combines power and nobility with exhilarating casualness. Disgorged after 30 months of lees storage in December 2012 and dosed at a slim five grams, it is well balanced thanks to its sweeping acidity and offers maximum champagne enjoyment with high craftsmanship and a long, delicately salty finish.

Score: 91
The NV Extra Brut Terroirs d’Ecueuil Premier Cru is a blend of 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay, picked in Ecueil, the 2019 base vintage is supplemented by 57% reserve wines. The shy nose gives gentle fruit, refined but restrained red and yellow plum, shimmers gently. The palate is just as restrained and shows a taut elegance, much enhanced by the presence of reserve wine. There is ripeness of fruit, fine mousse and a lovely phenolic edge that makes the mouth water. Restraint and depth is the name of the game. Dosage is 3.5gr/L. Disgorged: December 6, 2022. – Anne Krebiehl MW
