Wine Information

The Les Quarts vineyard is undoubtedly one of the best terroirs in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The beautifully situated vineyard faces southeast and is home to 48- to 80-year-old Chardonnay vines planted on siliceous, particularly iron-rich, clay and limestone soils from the Bajocian (Jura) region. Since 2008, the vineyard has been plowed by horse. Harvested by hand from September 18 to 23, 2021, whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation, followed by aging for 17 months, initially in barrels and foudres for 11 months, and then in foudres with 100% malolactic fermentation. Total sulphur is 34 mg/l. The pH is up to 3.22.

Light golden yellow

Nose

With the 2021 Les Quarts, a Chardonnay enters the stage whose intensity on the palate is barely detectable. However, this is typical of the wines from Pouilly-Vinzelles, which are always somewhat more restrained than those from Saint-Véran or Pouilly-Fuissé. The wine is reminiscent of dried mint, verbena, and dried violet flowers, as well as some tree bark, which meets notes of ripe lemon and lemon peel. All of this, however, remains fine, full of finesse, and almost seems a little intellectual.

Palate

The wine opens up on the palate. Here, it reveals its power and depth much more openly. It has white and yellow-fleshed fruit, as well as citrus notes, some tannin, and a clear acidity that creates tension. The Bret brothers harvest the grapes with great precision, so that the citrusy bitterness combines with the silkiness of the yeast aging, the tannin and a distinct saltiness and minerality to create a very successful whole.
