Product description for Johannes Zillinger Reflexion K* Grüner Veltliner 2023 (bio)
Info
The Johannes Zillinger winery celebrates its fortieth year of organic farming in 2024. This Wien was created as a quintessence of the past, as well as in recognition of and out of respect for the generations still active. The idea is to combine the favorite vineyards and vinification methods of Johannes, as well as his father and grandfather. All vineyards share the limestone soil in the subsoil, and of course, all three portions of this wine share the grape variety par excellence: Grüner Velltiner. 55-year-old vines come from the Kellerberg in Großbergen, his grandfather’s portion. The Wien was macerated for six hours and aged in large, old barrels. The older generation is added from the Kellerberg in Steinhal, where 12 hours of mash contact is used and the wine is aged in steel tanks. Johannes now sees the future more in northern locations with cooler climates. He contributes forty-year-old vines from the Hohe Eck. Its portion in this blend is pressed with whole grapes and then aged in 1000l amphorae. This bottling is available exclusively in Germany from Vinaturel.
Colour
Bright golden yellow with pale green reflections
Nose
A very spicy, distinctive nose awaits you in the glass. The grape variety is clearly recognizable here, albeit much quieter or more atypical than in many examples. In return, it exudes calm and makes a proud impression. Far from fruit and glamour. The wine’s great strength lies in its depth. A deep sniff reveals this vertical character enormously. For me, it reveals a very mature dose of herbal freshness. Lemon balm, thyme, sage, and mint. White pepper and a touch of cardamom complement this. Its fruit is subtle, yet enormously important. Bergamot and kaffir lime stand out. Serious, appealing, honest.
Palate
And it continues in exactly the same way on the palate. A rich performance, similar to the Austrian national team at the 2024 European Championships. With similar depth to that on the nose and a fabulous length, it spreads across the palate. A subtle spiciness surrounds it. Structured and dense, without being opulent. Quite the opposite. Its structure is rather drawn out and vertical. The fruit plays a subordinate role here, too, but it is tactilely impressive and shines with its energy. It vibrates on the palate and seems to never end.
