Product description for Huet Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 2022 (bio)

Wine Information

The Haut-Lieu is the vineyard that is the origin of the Huet winery. The Huet family first visited the village of Vouvray in 1928 and was so impressed by the property that now forms the winery and the five-hectare Le Haut-Lieu vineyard that they acquired both and founded the Huet winery. Le Haut-Lieu lies on the Vouvray plateau and is characterized by deep brown clay with a small amount of flint and chalk in the topsoil. The topsoil is called aubuis locally. The bedrock consists of yellow tuffeau limestone, and it lies four meters deep. The harvest began in 2022 on September 8th (the second earliest date in the winery’s history) and ended six weeks later (the harvest workers, this year there were 24, have never harvested for so long). Since heat waves and drought led to very heterogeneous ripening grape material, all variants of Chenin Blanc could be produced, from the base wine for Pétillants to 1er Trie. As usual, the grapes were meticulously sorted, pressed, and spontaneously fermented during the many harvests. Malolactic fermentation only took place in exceptional cases and in individual barrels. The wine was aged in used demi-muids. Moelleux 2022 is called Huet: 48 grams of residual sugar.

Nose

The Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux smells of tart bitter orange, but also takes on a little of the sweetness of Bitter orange marmalade is also present. The wine is also reminiscent of ripe, juicy stone fruit with a cool note of vanilla ice cream. As you would expect from a Chenin Blanc, there are also hints of lanolin, pears, apples, and especially apple skin. In the background, there is a very slightly smoky, stony note.

Palate

The key word for the Vouvrays from the Huet winery is balance. Balance is everything, especially in the residually sweet wines. The 2022 Le Haut-Lieu Moelleux has 48 grams of residual sugar but at the same time so much acidity that a great harmony emerges. The wine appears round, silky, drinkable, and timeless. The tannin nestles delicately on the palate. The spicy and piquant notes of herbs, blond tobacco, and zest only become apparent in the elongated finish, where they mingle with a slight saltiness. Of course, you can sense the sweetness of the Moelleux, but it’s completely integrated into the freshness, the clear acidity, and the stimulating minerality. There’s a lot of energy and a wonderful tension here, which only becomes apparent in the beginning and will develop further over the coming years or decades.
