Nose

Flint, smoky, yeasty – that’s the first impression of the 2017 Grüner Veltliner Riede Steiner Schreck Dritte Akt, which was pressed using the historic tree press. Vineyard peach, pear, apricot, rose petals, chamomile, and a hint of white nougat follow with air. Distinct herbal notes and a touch of ginger skillfully frame this charming and beautiful nose. Everything is very fine, complex, and wonderfully interwoven.

Palate

An attack on the palate: The acidity, perfectly embedded in the fruit and body, sweeps across our palate. Saliva flows, the mind is stimulated. Everything seems suspended and incredibly delicate, even the moderate alcohol content of just 12% vol. A magnificent and delicate Grüner Veltliner that sets entirely new standards. This act makes you want to shout da capo, with all your fervor.

Picked on the first of September, bottled unfiltered in June 2019 and to be released this autumn, Lang’s intensely yellow 2017 Riede Steiner Schreck Grüner Veltliner Dritter Akt is ripe and intense on the pure, fresh, stony-herbal, coolish-precise and spicy nose. Aged in 600-liter Stockinger oak vats, this is a full-bodied, intense, very elegant, refined and powerful Veltliner with good concentration and a pure and refreshing mineral finish with fine phenolics and grip. Pretty austere compared to the Ried Braunsdorfer, which is more delicate and refined than the Ried Schreck. Tasted in Weissenkirchen/Wachau last September and again in my home office in March 2020.
