The grapes for the Gemischter Satz Naturtal come from the Weisleiten and Ulm vineyards, both located on Vienna’s Nussberg. This Gemischter Satz, composed of Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Weißburgunder, Riesling, and Traminer, grows on soils of shell limestone and weathered limestone with subsoil limestone and a medium clay content. The grapes were selectively harvested by hand, mashed, and placed in amphorae, where spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts began. The wine remained on the skins in the amphorae for seven months before being gently racked the following March and placed without press wine in a steel tank, where it matured for a further six months. Unfined and unfiltered, it was allowed to mature in the bottle for a further four months.

Dark straw yellow with a slightly satiny opacity.

Nose

The nose of the 2021 Gemischter Satz Natural from HajszanNeumann is characterized by its long aging on the skins: alongside prominent fermentation notes, there are some pastries and a pot of strong brewed tea, alongside dark-roasted, salt-buttered toast with orange marmalade. Added to this are a handful of dried fruit, a bouquet of dried herbs, and a touch of lemon blossom in the top note.

Palate

Despite the slightly brittle appearance on the nose, the fruit radiates extract-sweetness and mellowness on the palate, contoured by the fine-grained tannins that give it its elegant feel and tart contours. With a firm structure on the palate, the phenols are fine-grained like sandpaper, complemented by a viscous feel and ethereally cool notes. A refreshing tonic in calm balance with a steady flow.
