Description
Product description for Georg Meissner Serrat de la Plane VdF 2020 (bio)
Dr. Georg Meißner has been researching and teaching biodynamic viticulture for many years and has accompanied many winemakers through their transition. One of his priorities is to establish sound training in this field, both in practical and academic contexts. During his viticulture apprenticeship, he fell in love with the wines and landscape of Roussillon. He maintains contact by “rescuing” two vineyards that would otherwise have been cleared. The vineyards are cultivated with family and friends. The over 100-year-old Carignan vines are located on a terrace surrounded by stone walls, rock, and forest. The Grenache vines are exposed to the wind and grow on dry, stony, weathered gneiss soil. During the early harvest, rigorous selection is carried out in the vineyard. The goal is to produce red wines with finesse, tension, and minerality. Serrat de la Plane means “stony plateau” in Catalan. The old vineyard with its ancient Grenache vines was once slated for uprooting, but fortunately, Meissner was able to take it over. The vines are planted in a well-ventilated location on weathered gneiss soils and produce minimal yields of just under 10 hl/ha.
Colour
Dark purple with violet reflections and a black core.
Nose
The 2020 Serrat de la Plane from Georg Meissner, made from 100% Grenache, smells of dark berries such as blackberries and mulberries and a hint of plum jam. Added to this are dark aromas of undergrowth, garrigue, and black olives, which give it its distinctive Mediterranean twist.
Palate
On the palate, the Serrat de la Plane is super juicy with deep, dark fruit of Amarena cherries and red berries. On the palate, it is delightfully transparent and clear, with almost silky tannins. Aromatically, it’s crystal-clear in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, underscored by herbal and spicy aromas. A subtle bass note from the weathered soils rumbles beneath, lending it additional pace and a sublime flow.
