Description
Product description for Fritsch Grüner Veltliner Schlossberg 1.ÖTW 2020 (bio)
Site Information
The vineyards surrounding the former Winkelberg Castle slope southward and are located on a plateau behind the Wagram River. Underneath the thick, fertile loess cover lie cold-period terrace gravel from the Danube, and beneath this, clayey-silty, Miocene marine sediments with sand deposits, indicating periodic storm events.
Maturation Information
The grapes were harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously for two months in used 2000-liter wooden barrels.
Colour
Sparkling, intense golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Grüner Veltliner Ried Schlossberg 1.ÖTW presents powerful, juicy fruit and plenty of spice on the nose. The aromas of dried apricots, mango, and orange combine with a brilliant floral scent and exotic spices like cinnamon and cardamom. The whole is enveloped in an earthy and stony depth that hints at its incredible development potential.
Palate
On the palate, it appears taut and demanding. The sweet fruit is accompanied by a beautifully stimulating acidity and distinct salty notes. Carried by the spicy note on the nose and a piquant tannin structure, we are dealing with a wonderful long-distance runner that could improve even further with a little ageing. Be sure to decant at this point.

Wine Advocate
Score: 93
The Oberstockstall 2020 Ried Schlossberg 1ÖTW Grüner Veltliner offers a clear, deep, refined and very elegant, precise and stony nose with ripe but fine fruit aromas and delicate spiciness. Lush and highly elegant on the palate, this is a rich yet perfectly balanced and also gentle and vivacious Veltliner with an intense, finely tensioned and stimulatingly salty finish. Excellent—and made for the long distance. Tasted in Grafenegg, September 2021.
