The creative joint venture between Norbert Taus and Alexander Fritsch found its way into this cuvée from the best batches at the Karl Fritsch winery. Alexander represents the new, young generation at the Karl Fritsch winery. Geiler Stoff is composed of the following components of the 2020 vintage: Grüner Veltliner from the Steinberg vineyard was matured in steel tanks. A Grüner Veltliner from the Schlossberg vineyard comes from large wooden barrels. Approximately 5% mash-fermented Grüner Veltliner provides texture and melt on the palate. A further 5% from Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, also from large wooden barrels, rounds it off sensorially. The label was designed by a Graz graffiti artist: “Der geile Off drinks geilen Stoff.”

Information on the location

The vineyards around the former Winkelberg Castle slope south and are located on a plateau behind the Wagram edge. Beneath the thick, fertile loess cover lie cold-period terrace gravel from the Danube, and beneath that lie clayey-silty, Miocene marine sediments with sand deposits that indicate periodic storm events.

Vineyard Information

The grapes were hand-picked and spontaneously fermented for two months in used 2000-liter wooden barrels.

Colour

Sparkling lemon yellow, bright reflections

Nose

The nose is totally stimulating and multifaceted. Initially, this “Geiler Stoff” (great stuff) is alive with abundant yellow fruit: mirabelle plum, apricot, but above all grilled pineapple and a hint of peach cream tart. The fruit is complemented very well by a hint of roasted aromas and a subtle nuance of smoke. This fine spiciness also complements the yeast flavour wonderfully. Roasted almonds, braided bread, buttered brioche with plenty of salted butter are immediately comforting associations. With a little patience, it can unfold its true strength in the glass. Freshly sliced pear comes into its own alongside local garden herbs: lemon balm, lemon thyme, marjoram, and wheatgrass. You can only eagerly await the first sip.

Palate

On the palate, it seamlessly meets the growing expectations. The yeasty texture sets in, but remains discreetly in the background. It presents itself juicy and is repeatedly interrupted by fine acidic peaks. This incredibly enhances the drinking experience. The yellow fruit now comes into its own in combination with the roasted aromas. Salty and slightly bitter contrasts counteract this. The finish then seems almost austere and has a slight spiciness. The aftertaste is alive with delicate, smoky nuances, and the herbs reveal a slightly dried version. True to the label: That’s wine.
