Wine Information

Grown on volcanic rock with a loess layer, the wine was aged in barriques, partly through spontaneous fermentation, partly through malolactic fermentation.

Brilliant golden yellow.

Nose

The 2022 Oberbergener Bassgeige Chardonnay VDP.Erste Lage presents itself with a cool and elegant note. Notes of apple, grapefruit, and pear pair with aromas of almond, flint, and dried pastries. A salty, mineral component hovers over everything. What delicacy and Burgundian finesse we are presented with.

Palate

On the tongue, juicy fruit combines with invigorating acidity and a fine phenolic finish that stimulates the palate and leaves you wanting more. The delicate roasted aromas from the oak aging are perfectly integrated into the wine’s smooth finish, and the delicate salty note on the finish lends it mineral depth. A truly elegant wine, as expected from Keller, that serves as a perfect companion to food.

The 2022 Oberbergen Bassgeige Chardonnay 1G opens with a bright, intense and elegant, almond-scented nose with flinty and sur lie aromas. Vinified in predominantly old, small barrels, this is a charmingly round and fruity, slightly creamy Chardonnay with caramel notes and a long, tight and tensioned, savory and vital finish. It’s still very young but promising. Friedrich Keller calls this wine his personal Kaiserstuhl Chablis. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in February 2024.
