Information about the wine

This wine comes from the Oberrotweiler Eichberg, a south-facing, partly southwest-facing site with black volcanic rock, planted in 1994 with Burgundian clones. It was fermented spontaneously to 1.3 grams of residual sugar. It was aged for 18 months in French barriques with 45% new wood.

Nose

The Eichberg Pinot Noir presents itself as typically powerful and darkly spicy, tart and herbal, with invitingly ripe, sweet and tart cherry fruit, accompanied by Indian spices and notes of slightly aged beef. There is also a hint of cassis, which indicates a slight reduction.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is fleshy and juicy with a blend of wild berries and sweet and tart cherries, a touch of rose, graphite, and rock. The tannin is still firm, but the wood is very well integrated. There’s a hint of rusticity in this wine, and I don’t mean that in a negative way. On the contrary, for me, the wine creates a connection to the place where it comes from: the soil, the earth, while the fruit is not just fleshy but juicy, with a few ethereal notes resonating.

Keller’s 2022 Eichberg Oberrotweil Spätburgunder GG opens with a “classically German” Pinot Noir nose and the fine smokiness of the Kaiserstuhl. Dense, enormously rich and juicy on the palate but also with vital substance and saltiness as well as fine tannins, this is a promising Baden Pinot that only shows its strength at the end. It is full of class. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.
