Product description for Forgeurac Engelsfelsen, Badischer Landwein 2020
Information about the Wine
The Engelsfelsen is undoubtedly the most spectacular site in Forgeurac’s portfolio. It is located in the uppermost, unconsolidated part of the prime Engelsfelsen vineyard in the Bühlertal valley. This site is extremely steep and, at 75 degrees, is considered one of the steepest in Europe. From there, it extends up into the Black Forest, from which cool air flows into the valley in the evenings. Because the vineyard faces south, there are significant temperature differences between day and night, which explain the intense fruitiness of the wines. The scattered vineyards are only accessible via incredibly narrow paths. The soils consist of very lean and shallow granite deposits. Depending on the vintage, the grapes were partially crushed or fermented as whole bunches. They were briefly foot-mashed in small wooden vats and fermented on the skins in moderate pigeage for around three weeks. The country wine was then pressed in an old basket press. The wine was drawn off via the Broquereau using gravity pressure. Aging took place exclusively in used wooden barrels, primarily barriques and pièces. No yeasts, no enzymes, no fining, and no filtration were used. Depending on the vintage, a maximum of 30 mg of sulphur was added.
Colour
Garnet red, lightening towards the rim.
Nose
The sweet, complex, and beguiling nose of the 2020 Engelsfelsen practically invites you to immerse yourself in it. Wild raspberries, sweet sour cherries, and sun-warmed blueberries mingle with floral notes of ivy, roses, and elderflower. Distinct aromas of intense and cool minerality, fine tobacco, wood smoke, and licorice round out the bouquet. A true pleasure experience that invites tasting.
Palate
In the 2020 Engelsfelsen, all impressions blend elegantly. The juicy berry fruit, the stimulating and invigorating acidity, which is typically broad for a granite soil, the polished tannins, and the salty minerality in the long and gripping finish. A pure wine that beguiles and impresses, and which I enjoy on its own. The accompanying dishes should be as puristic and intense as the wine itself. Decant and enjoy slightly chilled from Burgundy glasses.
