Description
Product description for Familia Nin Ortiz Planetes de Nin 2018
Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, the Planetes de Nin is also characterized by freshness and the dark aromas of the iron-rich Llicorella soils. The fact that the wine has a degree of power typical of Priorat is hardly noticeable because the precision of freshness takes center stage. But this is of course not entirely unimportant for the overall impression – especially since the Priorat is already clearly recognizable here. What is particularly inspiring is the almost playful lightness of the aromas, between cherry and garrigue, between ripe fruit and the robustness of ripe black stallion. This is framed by a tannin of fine to medium grain, which accompanies the Planetes de Nin right up to the long finish. There is already a lot here exactly where it belongs. A few years of bottle aging should perfect this.
Wine Information
The Planetes de Nin comes from the east-facing Finca les Planetes vineyard, directly opposite the town of Porrera. Years ago, Carles Ortiz planted Garnacha Negra and Cariñena there and also acquired some old stocks, including Garnacha Peluda, so the vines are between 10 and more than 80 years old. They grow on different formations of Llicorella schist, some harder, others more weathered. They contain varying amounts of iron, silica, and black clay. Around 40% whole bunches and 60% destemmed but uncrushed grapes were used, fermenting with their natural yeasts for 15 days in 3,000-liter oak barrels. The grapes were then pressed, and the skin-off maceration ended. Finally, the wine was aged in a 3,000-liter oak barrel for 20 months.

Nose
The 2018 Planetes de Nin appears dark, complex, and at the same time fresh. Some yeasty notes and the clear fruit demonstrate the youth of this wine. But what lies beneath is quite remarkable; for this is a Priorat wine with a particularly fine appearance. The aforementioned freshness in Nin-Ortiz becomes a touch more pronounced from year to year. The partial fermentation with the stems helps considerably in this regard. The notes of cherries and cherry stones, with their distinctive bitterness, so typical of the wine are just as present as much darker notes of blood or iron, ink and black tea, dark chocolate, black rock, juniper, and sloe.

The regular red 2018 Planetes de Nin was produced with grapes from the four hectares of vines they planted on their Les Planetes property in Porrera with a massal selection of indigenous grape varieties in 2008. It’s a blend of 45% Garnacha and 16% Garnacha Peluda, a variant of Garnacha that has some furs on the back of the leaf (called hairy Garnacha) and 39% Cariñena. There are different kinds of llicorella slate, some harder, some more decomposed and with different percentages of elements like iron, silica or black clay. The Cariñena was harvested between the 13th and 15th of September and the Garnacha between the 26th and 28th of September. They used around 40% full clusters and the rest destemmed but uncrushed grapes that fermented in 3,200-liter oak vats with their natural yeasts during 15 days; they pressed and put the grapes back in the vat to finish fermenting without skins, and then the clean wine was moved to a 3,000-liter oak vat where it completed an élevage of a total of 20 months. This has darker fruit than I expected, with notes of ink and graphite, and it’s a little earthy with iron-like notes of blood and meat. It has a medium to full body with some grainy tannins and a long, dry finish, but with very good freshness. They tell me it’s something typical from the stony and iron-rich soils from Les Planetes, and the wine needs a little bit more time in bottle. 10,020 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020.

Glistening ruby. Highly perfumed, fresh red and blue fruits, candied flowers and exotic spices; a minerally flourish emerges with air. Spicy and seamless in texture, offering appealingly sweet black raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors that show sharp definition and back-end lift. Finishes impressively long and minerally, with resonating florality, a hint of smokiness and youthful tannins adding shape and final grip.
