Enric Soler is a former award-winning sommelier. Today, he is one of Spain’s best white wine producers. In the Catalan region of Penedès, he runs a project with a few hectares of vineyards and a production of fewer than 15,000 bottles per year. The wines are as impressive as the small quantities. Like few others, Enric Soler demonstrates the enormous potential of the Xarel.lo grape variety, the main variety of Penedès. The “Improvisació 2022” comes from three biodynamically farmed vineyards with 40- to 60-year-old Xarel.lo vines. The wine is spontaneously fermented and aged in a combination of Stockinger foudres and concrete eggs.

The Improvisació 2022 possesses a captivating minerality and a stimulating aroma of herbs, a hint of pineapple, and quince. The nose is super fresh and clear, which is all the more surprising given that the 2022 vintage in Penedès was very hot and dry.
Palate
This white wine showcases all the strengths of the Xarel.lo grape variety: great acidity, moderate alcohol, plenty of structure, and a distinctive character. In addition to its precise and fine aromas, the Improvisació 2022 impresses above all with its texture, creamy and elegant mouthfeel, and mineral grip on the long finish. Although the wine is full-bodied, it is straightforward rather than overly broad. What Albariño was in the 2000s and Godello in the 2010s, Xarel.lo is today: the Spanish white wine variety worth discovering! And Enric Soler is the master of Xarel.lo.

The 2022 Improvisació was produced with Xarel.lo grapes from three vineyards ranging from 40 to 60 years of age that total 1.2 hectares on limestone and sandy soils, whose must was fermented in 1,200- and 2,000-liter Stockinger oak vats and concrete eggs with indigenous yeasts where the wine matured for eight to 10 months. It has a clean and fruit-driven nose with notes of white fruit and flowers, a medium-bodied palate with moderate ripeness and alcohol (12.5%), pungent flavors and very good freshness and balance reflected by the parameters (a pH of 3.12 and six grams of acidity). 5,220 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2023.
