Product description for El Sequé (Artadi) El Sequé 2018 (bio)
Marian Henß:This interplay of (fruit) sweetness and acidity continues on the palate. Juicy and fleshy, it offers a full-bodied taste experience. Delicate tannins complement the taut acidity very well. Both elements suggest considerable ageing potential. This wine progresses in large sips. The sour cherry clearly characterizes the aromatic picture of the finish. Some cedar wood and sage, along with lightly smoky nuances, complement the final moment.
Info
Since 1999, Artadi has been working in Alicante, devoting himself to Monastrell (Mourvèdre, Mataro). The El Sequé vineyard lies at an altitude of 600 meters and is characterized by limestone marl soils with sandy and clayey topsoils. The organically farmed grapes are harvested in 10-kilo crates and pre-fermented in a cool, dry place for 48 hours before spontaneous fermentation begins in warm conditions. Fermentation lasts around 14 days, with the pomace cap usually punched down twice a day. The wine is aged for 12 months in 500-liter French oak barrels.

Bright purple, violet reflections
Nose
The Monastrell opens in the glass with a spicy and, in a positive sense, rustic aroma. Elsewhere, this grape variety is also known as Mourvèdre. The fruit appears youthful and subtly lactic. Dark stone fruits such as plums, damsons, and sour cherries are particularly evident, as are some dates and mulberries. Despite the hot climate in Alicante, it appears taut and cool. A hint of graphite and limestone can be detected. The “El Sequé” has a chocolatey flavour and is reminiscent of black olives.
Palate
This interplay of (fruit) sweetness and acidity continues on the palate. Juicy and fleshy, it offers a full-bodied taste experience. Delicate tannins complement the taut acidity very well. Both elements suggest considerable ageing potential. This wine progresses in large sips. The sour cherry clearly dominates the aromatic aftertaste. A touch of cedarwood and sage, along with light smoky nuances, complement the finale.

The only wine I tasted from the winery in Alicante from Artadi was the red 2018 El Sequé, as the 2017 weather didn’t allow them to produce the sweet wine. This is pure Monastrell from organically farmed vines at 600 meters in altitude on sandy and clay soils. The wine went through malolactic and aged for 12 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. It was a very difficult year with lots of rain, which decimated the yields. The wine is finer, more delicate, less Mediterranean with more fruit and quite approachable. It’s certainly lighter than your average Mediterranean Monastrell, quite ethereal. It has very good freshness and very fine tannins. It has very clean and focused flavors with very good freshness. I like this vintage very much, but it was at the cost of production. In 2018, they only produced 20,000 bottles. It was bottled in July 2020.
