Description

Product description for Clos du Moulin aux Moines Auxey-Duresses “Moulin aux Moines” Monopole blanc 2020 (bio)

Marian Henß:On the palate, it follows on seamlessly from the previous impressions. Clear as an ice stream and so full of cool elegance. Dark attributes and earthy notes give it a sublime appearance. But above all, it thrives on clarity and precision. The acidity breaks through the subtly bacony structure. It bundles itself into a beam of distinct minerality. Focused like a laser. The mouthfeel is varied and stimulating to drink. You approach the end in large sips. The nuances of lemon tart, nuts, and caramelized zest come through very well. A hint of baked apple and marzipan are also evident in the finish.

Info

The winery is located in the valley between Meursault and Auxey-Duresses. In the past, it divided its activities between grain mills and grape presses. The AOC for this origin has existed since 1937. The site, as the name suggests, is bordered by a stone wall and demarcated to the south by the Cloux stream. The subsoil is rich in clay and limestone. The Chardonnay vines are located on the edge of the Monopol site, adjacent to the Meursault district. This area covers 0.8 hectares, and the vines were planted in 2003. The yield is estimated at 25-30 hl/ha. After selective hand-harvesting, the must undergoes direct oxidation. Fermentation takes place in 400-liter barrels. 10% of the barrels are new. The wine ages in barrels for twelve months without battonage or racking.

Nose

The 2020 Monopol site delivers an intensely fragrant nose. It combines warm stone fruit with some shortcrust pastry and yeast pastry. Mirabelle plums, apricots, and peaches provide plenty of yellow fruit. A bit of grilled pineapple underscores this even more. Freshly baked shortcrust pastry and some cream slice with canned mirabelle plums seem kitschy, but they go perfectly with it. Yeast and vanilla make a restrained but present encounter. Nettle, lemon balm, and sorrel also provide a good portion of freshness. Fennel, coriander seeds, and anise complement the ethereal notes in the background.

Palate

And it seamlessly follows on from all these impressions. With a fine melt and a hint of creaminess, it initially gives the fruit time and space to unfold. Yellow through and through, as one would expect. Then it shifts to a cooler impression, strongly supported by the pleasantly present and moderate acidity. It displays a strong edge, supported by a subtle bitterness. The linear minerality, characterized by limestone, provides ample elegance and seems to end abruptly. It seems as if it were standing on the edge of a cliff, and behind this bitterness follows an ethereal freshness in enormous depth.
