The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, along with small portions of all other grape varieties permitted in the C9dP, although the proportion of Grenache and Mourvèdre was higher than usual in 2021. The yield was just 16 hl/ha, less than half the AOC limit of 35 hl/ha—which is already low. Add to that the weather: “In six vintages, I lost the equivalent of two. In ’17, rot, -40%; in ’18, mildew, -70%. 19 and ’20 were good; in ’21, almost 40% loss due to frost; in ’22, hail, -40%.” The grapes were destemmed and subjected to a one-day cold pre-fermentation. The grapes were then fermented spontaneously without pigeage in a cement cuvée and then over a period of two weeks. The wine then remained in the tank for malolactic fermentation and was finally racked off with the fine lees into large barrels, where it was able to age for another 12 months.

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022 is already a highly seductive wine, offering a complex, but above all sensual, overall impression. It smells of garrigue, sage, thyme, and lavender, licorice and a touch of leather, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, and undergrowth. The wine appears ripe and voluminous, as well as lively and fresh.

Palate

It is always impressive how the alcohol is packaged in this wine. Of course, you can sense warmth in this Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but not heat or opulence. The ripe, concentrated fruit and spice are balanced with freshness and minerality. The 2022 Clos des Papes offers plenty of energy and power, a deep dimension of earthiness, forest floor, and peat, hints of kirsch and plenty of licorice, round, present tannins, and a dense core of spices around which the ripe dark fruit clusters. An elegant, deep Châteauneuf-du-Pape of the highest order.
