Description
Product description for Clemens Busch Riesling “vom roten Schiefer” 2023 (bio)
Wine Information
The Riesling from the Red Slate comes predominantly from the “Rothenpfad” plot (above the railway viaduct opposite Pünderich). The soil here is very light and consists primarily of very soft, weathered red clay slate. Some of the grapes also come from the Nonnengarten site, which lies west below Marienburg Castle. Here the soil is also red (one plot bears the traditional name “Rote Vein”), but is more heavily soiled and significantly heavier. The wines from this area are always somewhat earthier and crisper. These two types complement each other perfectly and have therefore formed the basis for the Riesling from the Red Slate since the 2003 vintage.
Colour
Light, sparkling golden yellow with distinct green reflections.
Nose
The 2023 Riesling “vom roten Schiefer” presents itself with intense aromas of vineyard peach, orange, red apples, and dried apricots. This is accompanied by aromas reminiscent of elderberry pulp and acacia, an earthy depth and smoky notes, as well as subtle hints of spices such as cardamom and cinnamon, initially subtly hinted at due to its youth at this stage.
Palate
On the palate, it appears juicy, with invigorating acidity, peppery spice, and grip. Its moderate alcohol inspires the senses, and notes of grapefruit and lemon in the long finish stimulate with every sip. This is a true long-distance runner in the glass, which will blossom with further maturity and catapult its minerality even further.

Score: 92
The 2023 Riesling vom Roten Schiefer hails from the pre-harvest of the Nonnengarten and the younger vines on the Rothenpfad. Reductive smokiness wraps itself around red-cheeked peach and crushed tansy. This contains delicate aromas of dried, peppery blueberry and peach. The palate is crystalline, stony and taut but full of tingling, citrusy, herbal notes. It has wonderful spiciness on a super-taut palate. (Bone-dry)
