Product description for Clemens Busch Riesling Marienburg Grosse Lage “Raffes” 2021 (bio)

Info

The “Falkenlay” parcel lies between “Fahrlay” and “Rothenpfad.” The soil here is somewhat deeper and characterized by gray slate. This area was always considered the prime piece of the Marienburg vineyard by the old winemakers. Due to its special location, protected from the cold winds from the eastern mountain saddle, the grapes here always reach a particularly ripe level. The wines made from healthy grapes are fruity, creamy, and not only particularly rich, but also delicately mineral. The noble sweet Auslese and Beerenauslese wines from the Botrytis selections also demonstrate exceptional qualities and are usually among the best of our winery. We harvest a very special selection of healthy grapes on one of our oldest terraces within the “Falkenlay,” referred to in the land registry as “RAFFES.” Year after year, this selection provides the basis for the winery’s densest and most concentrated wine: Marienburg Raffes.

Nose

Upon first sniff, the 2021 Marienburg Raffes GG lives up to its reputation. The aromatic density is unparalleled, without conveying opulence. Vineyard peach takes center stage alongside apricot and orange zest. Behind this, however, dark nuances of wet stones, flint, warm slate soil, and a touch of cold smoke build up. Elderberry and raspberry build up and enter the duel in the background with rotten apples and fresh pears. Sage, oregano, and mint, as well as eucalyptus and lemon balm, display a versatile and ever-emerging herbal spice. Refreshing, ethereal, and captivating. Fresh peas, coriander seeds, and fennel add another level of complexity.

Palate

The initial impression is no less complex than its nose suggests. It appears dense and builds real power on the palate. Its elegance sets a new benchmark. It picks up the pace on the palate with a racy sensibility. The fruit fades into the background. Minerality and acidity take over. With great finesse and a cool, stony mouthfeel, it leaves its sensory mark. The herbs combine ethereal freshness, coolness, and spice on the palate and linger long in the finish. Its mouthfeel lingers on the palate for minutes. A great Riesling with great potential for eternity.
