Description
Product description for Clemens Busch Riesling Marienburg Grosse Lage “Felsterrasse” 2020 (bio)
Directly opposite the family home on the other bank of the Moselle is the largest portion of the Busch family’s vineyards in the Marienburg vineyard. The former division into individual vineyards fell victim to wine legislation in the 1970s. To emphasize the specific differences within the Marienburg vineyard, Clemens Busch vinifies the plots separately and bottles the wines under the former parcel names, such as Fahrlay or Flakenlay. This allows the various slate soils (blue, gray, and red slate) and the special microclimates to clearly express themselves in the wine. The wines, which are harvested very late, are characterized by enormous richness and power, as well as mineral substance.
Wine Information
This wine comes from more than 90-year-old Riesling vines, trained in the classic single-vine system, from the Pünderich Marienburg Falkenlay rock terrace. This exposed site is characterized by gray slate. It is considered Clemens Busch’s favorite parcel. The grapes are slowly pressed as whole clusters after a short maceration period. Clemens Busch’s wines are all spontaneously and slowly fermented and mature for at least two years in large barrels.
Colour
Medium straw yellow
Nose
On the nose, Clemens Busch’s Riesling Marienburg “Felsterrasse” 2020 suggests a subtle and cool wine, pure, bright, mineral, and with a considerable underlying power. Everything seems tightly woven, yet luminous in the aromas of citrus fruits, green stone fruit, greengage, stone and herbs, a touch of wax and lanolin, and a hint of pear cream and smoke.
Palate
On the palate, this Großes Gewächs delights with great depth and precision, juiciness and smoothness, an entire orchard of crisp fruits, spices and herbs, some white currants, and plenty of slate spice. A penetrating saltiness and vibrant minerality are already evident, which, together with the acidity, creates plenty of excitement. Nevertheless, this is still a matter of perspective; the GG is still very young and has its heyday ahead of it. But with a carafe and a little time, it’s hard to escape the wine’s fascination.
