Directly opposite the family home on the other bank of the Moselle is the majority of the Busch family’s vineyards in the Marienburg vineyard. The former division into individual vineyards fell victim to wine legislation in the 1970s. To emphasize the specific differences within the Marienburg vineyard, Clemens Busch vinifies the plots separately and bottles the wines under the former parcel names, such as Fahrlay or Flakenlay. This allows the different slate soils (blue, gray, and red slate) and the specific microclimates to clearly express themselves in the wine. The wines, which are harvested very late, are characterized by enormous richness and power, as well as mineral substance.

The 2020 Pündericher Marienburg Grosses Gewächs Fahrlay Reserve is tender on the nose with stone and lemon notes and a little salty lemon zest. The palate is intense, sporting a little pineapple somewhere in the wings, but it all boils down to almost candied lemon intensity with a long, dry finish. Very concentrated, very intense, very stony on the finish. (Bone-dry)
