Wine Information

La Diablesse is a Cabernet Franc from Beaumont en Véron, from the so-called Picasse terroir, characterized by clay and white limestone. The vineyard faces north and covers just 0.8 hectares. Vines range in age from 50 to 100 years. The grapes were harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously with their own yeasts in concrete to preserve the typical freshness of the terroir. This was followed by slow malolactic fermentation in 400-liter barrels (20% of which were new oak). The wine was bottled after eleven months, unfined and unfiltered, with a low sulphur content.

Colour

Young purple red with slight lightening of the edges

Nose

The 2021 Chinon La Diablesse appears elegant and refined with dense red and dark fruit reminiscent of raspberries, blackberries, and ripe cherries with a hint of cassis. The fruit appears ripe, but also somewhat cool, which may be due to the vines’ northern exposure. Aging in wood gives the Cabernet Franc a light hint of Bressaola, a touch of smoke, and chocolate. The subtle spiciness of allspice, leaves, and rock is also pleasant.

Palate

On the palate, the Chinon appears pure, clear, and juicy. It has a pleasantly firm acid structure and noble tannins reminiscent of limestone dust. What is fascinating is the tension that La Diablesse builds and that lasts until the finish. It is elegant and refined, yet also solid and earthy. The dark, juicy, and ripe fruit is accompanied by notes reminiscent of forest floor, leaves, and undergrowth. The dark fruit appears juicy, at times even crisp. What remains fascinating right up to the long finish is the acidity, which seems ripe but insistent, accompanied by an increasingly prominent minerality.
