Description

Product description for Boris Champy Pommard En Boeuf AOP 2020 (bio)

Information about the wine

For this wine, Boris Champy used Pinot Noir from the En Bœuf plot in Pommard. The plot is located in the heights of Pommard, just before Nantoux. The vine density is around 10,000 in Guyot training. Boris Champy destemmed half of the grapes, resulting in 50% whole bunches. He gently extracted the grapes and aged the wine for twelve months, one-third in new oak in the pièce and two-thirds in one-year-old oak.

Nose

Boris Champy’s Pommard En Boeuf 2020 is a memorable, lively, fresh, and dense Pinot Noir with clear notes of dark raspberries and ripe plums, with the stalks quickly blending with cocoa and a hint of cinnamon. A hint of the finest wood lies above it. In addition to dark, slightly warmed chocolate, there is also a hint of cinnamon, bergamot, and pipe tobacco.

Palate

On the palate, the En Boeuf appears downright smooth, without denying the earthiness typical of the appellation. But this is embedded in crisp red and dark berry fruit, with notes of cherries and plums, bay leaves, tobacco, and pepper. The wine possesses a great deal of power, allowing it to breathe in the new wood and the stalks perfectly, and presents itself with great balance and elegance even at a young age. An excellent Pommard that would easily qualify as a 1er Cru, without actually being one.

Wine Advocate

Score: 90+

The 2020 Pommard En Boeuf unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, raw cocoa, plums, cherries and forest floor, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant palate framed by powdery tannins and concluding with a saline finish. Once again, its precise, ethereal style reflects its location in the combe that runs from Pommard to Nantoux.

Vinous

Score: (91-93)

The 2020 Pommard En Boeuf, matured in 50% new oak, is quite backward on the nose and demanded encouragement from the glass, gradually, reluctantly unfolding with slightly earthy black fruit, hints of Ear Grey and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity, touches of sage and white pepper, the 50% whole bunch beautifully integrated on the finish. What a lovely Pommard, one that is Premier Cru level in all but name.
