Description
Product description for Boris Champy Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Rouge, Clou 377 AOP 2022 (bio)
In 2019, Boris Champy took over the domaine, founded by Didier Montchovet in 1984. Champy, who previously managed estates such as Dominus in California, Louis Latour, and Clos de Lambrays, took over the domaine, which had already converted to organic and then biodynamic farming in the 1980s, making it the first Demeter-certified winery in Burgundy. The vineyard now covers twelve hectares in the once cooler Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, which Boris Champy sees as the future of Burgundy due to climate change. The wine comes from the Au Clou plot in Nantoux. The soil is very stony, white, and marly. It is extremely poor and barren, but the marl provides an excellent water supply. The plots are cultivated with traditional low-growing vines (10,000 vines/ha) using single Guyot pruning and, in some cases, double Guyot pruning. The grapes are hand-picked at optimal ripeness, followed by gentle extraction of 80–100% whole bunches in wooden barrels. The wines are aged for an average of 12 months in new barrels.
Colour
Dark, yet transparent ruby red.
Nose
The 2022 Clou 377 Hautes-Côtes du Beaune Rouge from Boris Champy is defined by its dark character, evoking undergrowth, good tobacco, and spices like black cardamom before the fruit takes over. This, however, comes more from the light red corner, the cherry more sour than Kinder Em-eukal, the red berries more currant than cassis. A joyfully radiant character that portends fresh Burgundy enjoyment.
Palate
On the palate, it delivers on the promise of the nose: a crisp, fresh Burgundy with clear red fruit and a thoroughly youthful character. Driven by the crisp acidity and taut red fruit, the tannins are tightly knit and polished, overall more mid-range and clearly an ally of the acidity in terms of drinking speed. A fast-paced Burgundy pleasure.
